Learning and Loving

Hey Again,

Well, another week has gone by since I last updated you guys. It was a wonderful week!! I have learned so much and grown so much and felt God in amazing ways.

If you remember in my post last time (or maybe the time before) God brought "joy" into my life through a little girl named Joy. Well, He did it again! It is like God is making things very simple for me to understand and experience. I had been working through some things and searching to see how God can make these situations better. I was sort of lacking the faith in God that He was good enough and big enough to handle the problems of Mathare Valley. Then, on Wednesday morning, I spent an hour in the home of a woman named Faith. haha God is so funny. Faith has HIV, her husband left her, and she doesn't even have enough money to give her 2 girls breakfast everyday, but she PRAISES God and loves Him so much. She told me that she chooses to be positive because she realizes that God will provide for her and will take care of her family. This woman has more faith than anyone I know. She was not at all discouraged or sad or angry because of the situation she has been thrown into, but she rejoices in the fact that God is working in her life and will never abandon her as her husband did. This is a woman I will never forget.

I have had a lot of free time during the day. At first, this really bothered me because I felt like I was wasting my time, but things look a little different now. I have been able to get 3 really wonderful books that talk about God's love and poverty and being resilient. I have LOVED my free afternoons to read. I have done so much learning and growing during this past week because of the amazing books I get to read.

Well, I have to cut this post short. We need to run and catch a Matatu so we can go eat dinner at one of the national's homes.

Life in the Slums.

Well, we have been in Nairobi for over a week now. It is crazy here. There are so many people in this city. There is so much brokenness and despair. I honestly have never seen anything like this in my life. I thought I had prepared myself for this summer - but I have quickly realized that I was not as ready as I thought. September

September is over people. I can't really wrap my head around that. The days seem long and the weeks go on forever, but in a blink, I’m turning my calendar to the next page. How crazy.  September was good to me. Another great month. There was a lot of work, a lot of love, and a lot of wishing the temperature was cooler. But I look back on September with gratitude.  Honestly, I’m not really sure what to write about here for September. Last month’s blog felt big and slightly dramatic (I know, that’s shocking coming from me), and this month, I’m feeling the pressure to level up in some way. But here I am, 7:00 am on October 1st, trying to come up with something beautiful or profound to share about September, and I can't. And maybe that’s ok. Maybe sometimes we unintentionally look for the big moments to give us some sort of significance or purpose.   December Well it wouldn’t be my monthly blog if I didn't wait until the last possible second to write and post here huh? I’m glad, if anything, these blogs have shown me that I’m consistently the queen of procrastination.  It’s a heavy crown to wear but somebody has got to do it.  Can you believe we’ve made it to the end of 2023? What a year it has been! Honestly I’m proud that I accomplished this goal of writing a blog each month. It’s cool to look back over these posts to all the things I’ve been through and all the emotions I’ve experienced.  I couldn't make a wrap-up-the-year-post without mentioning my love Mike.
